About Us

What is the 1855 Project?

The Project is a collaboration of Spartan Alum, Patrick Rigan, Peter Rigan, Brian Hosmer, and Cristin Hosmer.  Our Team is passionate about bringing high-quality homegrown grapes from our vineyards to your glass. The Project was started with the goal of making small batches of unique, innovative and some might say experimental wines. 

To “balance the scales” there is a lone Wolverine, Doug Rigan, who considers himself the Patriarch of the Project.

The 1855 Project pays homage to Michigan State University which was founded in 1855 and known as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan.

  • Patrick Rigan

    FOUNDING PARTNER | WINEMAKER

    I graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business and a proud member of the Spartan Football Team. My ongoing relationships with my Spartan Football family have been a driving force in my success.

    My dedication to all things grape growing and wine making is a testament to my Spartan Will.

  • Peter Rigan

    FOUNDING PARTNER

    I graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Horticultural Science.

    I entered the industry in 2012 and spent my time between Old Mission and The Leelanau Peninsulas. I have worked with countless growers, developed vineyard sites, and continued my practice on Old Mission at both the Hawthorne Vineyard and our Family Farm. I pride myself on producing quality fruit that showcases the location it comes from.

    My wife Patti and I purchased the property that is now the Rigan Vineyard back in about 1994.

    We love it on the farm, and enjoy having our families all in the neighborhood!
